"Danny Glover is in the house!!!"
We had no idea that Danny Glover was at the Rutgers Women's Basketball game. Neither did the rest of the audience. But, sure enough, Danny Glover's signature smile lit up the overhead monitors and our hearts. And there he was, less than 100 feet away from us.
After that game, Mimi and I spent about a half-hour with Chyna Cornwell, Kier's four-year basketball scholarship recipient, and her parents. What wonderful people they are, all three. Chyna is a basketball talent who deserves to be drafted by the WNBA. We thank Chyna for keeping Kier's spirit alive on and off the basketball court for the last four years.
As the fans thinned out, I found myself directly beyond Danny, and I bent over to thank him for his contribution to our RU Class of 1971's Paul Robeson Memorial Plaza. Having been a committee member representing our Class of 1971, I wanted to ensure that Danny knows he is forever a part of this monument to Paul Robeson.
Paul Robeson was a 1919 Rutgers College graduate. After he graduated, he earned a law degree, became a pro football player, and over time became a national and international advocate of human and civil rights, a supporter of unions, a world-famous singer and actor, a teacher and mentor, a writer, and a master of many languages.
Danny and I spoke about our mutual admiration and respect for Paul Robeson. He told me a story about Harry Belafonte, another human and civil rights luminary and famous actor and singer, who, when he was 19 y.o., found himself alone in the presence of Dr. Martin Luther King and W.E.B. Dubois. Mr. Belafonte was a little shocked at this opportunity and flustered for much of the beginning of the meeting. Mr. Belafonte would have that opportunity repeated many times over the years of work the three did together to advance civil and human rights.
I asked Danny if he knew about the Robeson Plaza. He did not, nor did he remember the important part he played in supporting its construction. He bought one of the larger pavers and engraved it with words of love and respect for Mr. Robeson. On behalf of the RU Class of 1971's Robeson Plaza Committee, I thanked him and invited him to visit the Plaza.
During the last few minutes we spent together, we talked about how our lives had gone so fast and how, while being old in tooth, we were still young at heart in working to make the world a better place for everyone.
What a great time I had in those ten to fifteen minutes. What a fantastic opportunity to thank Danny for his support of the construction of The Paul Robeson Plaza and for all the work he has done to make the world a better place.
I hope that Danny comes back to see the Paul Robeson Plaza. Members of the Rutgers College Class of 1971 Paul Robeson Plaza Committee would love to share that moment with him.
You can visit the Paul Robeson Plaza near College Avenue on Seminary Place on the Rutgers campus.
Love, Peace, and Equality for All,
Larry

My great Uncle, Malcom Pitt, was a close friend of Paul Robeson at Rutgers. He was also RU ‘19. The only story I remember was when Robeson came back from Russia and was singing at Carnegie Hall (I think). Uncle Mal went to the concert then went back stage but was told Mr Robeson is not seeing anyone. My uncle said “please tell him Malcom is here.” The door flew open and Robeson grabbed and hugged him and they talked for a long time.
BTW… why was Glover at the game? And is he an RU grad?
