Dear Kier’s Kidz Family and Friends:Today, the 23rd of April 2026, marks the 18th anniversary of Kiersten Hickman-Perfetti’s death from a pediatric cancer. Our family is deeply saddened that Kier died. Kier had so much more life in her, as all who knew her would attest. Kier’s heart even continued to beat for two hours after she took her last breath. Kier had more to do in life.Of all Kier’s dreams, perhaps the greatest was to help children and young adults with cancer face and beat their cancer and to help find a cure for all pediatric cancers. She had a mission she knew she would not live to complete. So, Kier asked us to fulfill her mission when she created Kier’s Kidz, our nonprofit that addresses that wish and that mission.Kier would be proud of us, all of us who have contributed in any way to the success of that mission. She would love every single one of us. She would be happy for the children, young adults, and families we have helped. She would ask us to continue our work and to help find cures for pediatric cancers. Dear Kier’s Kidz Family and Friends:I would like to express our deepest gratitude and best wishes to the National Honor Society (NHS) students and staff of the Hun School in Princeton, NJ, for their hard work and generosity in raising and donating over $1,300 to Kier’s Kidz. Sanah Shah, a Hun School NHS student and a volunteer at Kier’s Kidz, deserves special thanks for encouraging her schoolmates to help Kier’s Kidz assist the kids and young adults with cancer in need in our area.Hun School has an excellent reputation as an academic powerhouse in its 6th- to 12th-grade and postgrad schools. Clearly, the students there learn much more than academics. Their work on behalf of kids and young adults with cancer demonstrates emotional maturity and depth of empathy, underscoring the importance the school places on social development. Dear Kier’s Kidz Family and Friends A few weeks a Dear Kier’s Kidz Family and Friends A few weeks ago, Sarah and Usra Attalla, two of Kier’s Kidz esteemed Board members, delivered again on a promise that we made to Imam Sohaib Sultan, for Chaplain at Princeton University, to improve the lives of people hospitalized with cancer. Chaplain Sultan had a zoom meeting with us literally one week before he died from cancer. His wish was for the people of Kier’s Kidz to help improve cancer treatment facilities' psychological, spiritual, and physical environments. He briefly spoke of his experience of how his time in treatment was unnecessarily more difficult because of the relative lack of attention given to the impact these facilities have on the psychological and spiritual life of their patients. We promised to help fulfill his wish. Sarah and Usra have been the leaders of the Chaplain Sohaib Sultan Project of Kier’s Kidz right from the beginning. Having conferred with the staff of CINJ’s pediatric oncology unit, Sarah and Usra purchased gifts for the young children and adolescents that would make their time in and out of the unit more pleasant. They bought the kids their own dinosaur and unicorn fleece blankets, drawing books, memory foam travel-neck pillows, and noise-canceling earphones. These cool and comforting gifts will make the kids’ treatment experiences just that much better. I want to thank Sarah and Usra for the thought, time, and energy they put into these acts of love and charity. Sohaib Sultan would be proud of them. We at Kier’s Kidz sure are. Leukemia is the most common pediatric cancer affec Leukemia is the most common pediatric cancer affecting young children and teens, accounting for nearly 1 out of 3 cancers. It occurs when abnormal cells grow in the bone marrow, flow into the bloodstream, and multiply at an exponential rate. Its symptoms include: • Pale skin • Feeling tired, weak, or cold • Dizziness • Headaches • Shortness of breath • Fever • Frequent or long-term infections • Bone or joint pain If you notice your child has any of these symptoms, speak to your physician and set up an appointment right away. During the appointment, your pediatrician will ask you questions about your child’s symptoms and examine your child. Blood tests and other tests may be recommended. If the tests come back negative. but the symptoms persist, get a second opinion from an oncologist (at a Comprehensive Cancer Care Center, if possible) to ensure your child’s well-being. (This post is meant to be educational. All decisions made about your child’s health and treatment should be made in concert with your child’s medical providers.)
